October was a pivotal month at August. After hundreds of conversations with partners, associates, innovation teams, and existing customers, one message became clear:

AI becomes transformative only when it lives in the same spaces where lawyers already work”

Most legal AI tools force lawyers to switch between applications, losing context with every transition. You receive a contract in Outlook, download it, upload it somewhere else to review it, make edits in Word, and manually carry forward what you learned. Each handoff wastes time and creates opportunities for error.

This month, we shipped our Word Add-in, Outlook Integration, Playbooks upgrades, and Quill to solve this. Your context now moves with you automatically, whether you're reviewing an email, editing a clause in Word, or generating a tabular summary in the Assistant:

August for Word — AI Inside the Drafting Workspace

Lawyers spend most of their drafting time in Word, but until now, using AI meant copying text out, pasting it into another tool, waiting for results, then manually moving edits back. This breaks concentration and slows down review.

August for Word eliminates this friction. The AI works directly inside your document with no window switching, no copying and pasting, and no loss of formatting. It feels native because it is native.

What’s new

  • Inline redlines and clause rewrites with tracked changes

  • Playbook-powered reviews directly inside Word

  • Extraction across multiple documents (parties, dates, definitions, obligations)

  • Negotiation fallbacks that reflect your firm’s preferred positions

  • Generate tabular reviews from the Assistant and continue them seamlessly in Word

With these updates, Word becomes more than a text editor, it becomes an intelligent partner that preserves style, formatting, and structure while improving the speed and accuracy of every review.

Playbooks — Turning Knowledge Into Automated, Consistent Output

Every firm has institutional knowledge about how to review contracts: preferred language for limitation of liability clauses, fallback positions on indemnification, client-specific risk tolerances. But this knowledge usually lives in partner brains, old redlines, or scattered examples that associates have to hunt down.

Playbooks capture these preferences and apply them automatically during review. This month, we made them easier to create, more contextual, and more deeply integrated across the platform.

What’s new

  • Clause-by-clause checks that label sections as “Compliant” or “Needs Revision”

  • Preferred and fallback language suggestions in a single click

  • Support for client specific requirements, risk tolerances, and negotiation patterns

  • Cross-document consistency checks for definitions, timelines, and obligations

  • Ability to generate Playbooks from past redlines using the Assistant

Creating a Playbook used to require long drafting sessions and scattered examples. Now you can build one in minutes by uploading a prior contract, extracting your preferred edits, and letting August compile everything into a structured set of rules.

August for Outlook — The Inbox Becomes a Workspace

Most legal matters start in email. A client sends a contract for review. Opposing counsel replies with comments on your redlines. A partner forwards a 47-message thread asking for a summary by end of day.

But inboxes aren't built for legal work. They're built for reading and replying, not for analyzing attachments or tracking negotiation positions. August for Outlook turns your inbox into an active workspace where you can review, redline, and respond without leaving the email thread.

What’s new
  • Summaries of long email threads that capture key issues and decisions

  • Attachment review and redline generation without downloading files

  • Playbook evaluation applied to inbound documents

  • One click actions like “Review,” “Summarize,” and “Draft Reply”

  • Context from Outlook flows directly into Word and the August app

Your style, preferences, and matter context follow you automatically. You can start in Outlook, move into Word, finish in the Assistant, and never lose continuity.

Quill — A Drafting Engine Built for Legal Precision

Generic AI drafting tools produce text that looks plausible at first glance but falls apart under scrutiny. Numbering restarts mid-section. Definitions appear that were never referenced. Tone shifts between paragraphs. The cleanup takes longer than drafting from scratch.

Quill works differently. It understands document structure, tone, numbering conventions, definitions, and cross-references before generating text. This means drafts that match your firm's standards with far less cleanup required.

What’s new
  • Document aware drafting that adapts to the style and format in front of it

  • Rewrite modes that offer more precision (formal, direct, protective, etc.)

  • Template aligned drafting for NDAs, MSAs, SOWs, engagement letters, and more

  • Ability to view redlines and revisions across versions

  • Consistent voice across long documents and multiple drafting rounds

Quill allows teams to move from a blank page to a clean, partner ready draft in a fraction of the time.

Auto create Tabular Review From Assistant — Agentic experience

Some questions need more than a paragraph response. When you're reviewing dozens of NDAs for consistent confidentiality definitions, or comparing representations across a dozen credit agreements, you need structured analysis in a table, not a wall of text.

The Assistant can now recognize when your request needs this deeper format and automatically generate a tabular review without you asking. When the query is complex, multi-issue, or risk-sensitive, August builds the entire table for you with the right columns and structure for the analysis.

What’s new

  • Automatically determines the right columns (issue, confidentiality definition, representatives, recommended language, etc.)

  • Uses structured review to extract salient information and then respond in a synthesized manner

  • Improves reasoning capability by using a multi step analysis

This creates an agentic experience where August proactively elevates the work product and uses other tools available.

New Assistant Page + Voice Mode

Our Assistant interface needed to match the sophistication of what it can do. We simplified the layout for clarity, moved the prompt library to the top right for easier access, and added voice mode so you can speak to August like a true Associate.

What’s new

  • Simplified interface for clarity and continuity, moving prompt library to the top right

  • Improved reasoning capability by using a multi step analysis

  • Voice mode: allowing you to instruct August in its prompts through voice commands

Where We’re Headed

Each of these is part of a larger vision: a unified workspace for lawyers where context persists, knowledge compounds, and every tool works together. We are building continuity across the entire drafting ecosystem so lawyers can move through their day without losing momentum or switching environments.

August is becoming the quiet layer that powers great legal work across every surface where it happens.
